Jiddu
I've always had the theory that there are some specific moments in our lives when we got amazed or shocked by particular experiences or people that will mark us and somehow influence significantly some of the decisions that we'll take in the future.
From some time now I've been trying to identify the moments that inspired me to grow in the art field and to became a drawing lover.
The result of this exercise has the power to brought some cool old memories as you will know.
In my case there are some interesting moments. I can remember some of my early days when my father took me out to the garden of our house in the "Ajusco" woods to paint. He use to gave me a lot of materials and a variety of canvas and let me make a mess of it, pure fun ha ha. It's surprising that my parents keep safe every one of this masterpieces.
Later, in primary school I knew a boy named Eduardo, he was older than me but damn! this guy's drawing skill was amazing as I can remember. He painted once a giant three-headed dragon over a school wall with the help of two other kids, It irradiates awesomeness and I felt very jealous about him, he really made me want to draw better.
In middle school I had one of the most big push ups on my career I guess, by the end of it, I realized that I wanted to be an artist, the reason, my art teacher. Her name was Nuria and I was totally in love with her, she was so fucking talented, graduated from the art institute named "La esmeralda" (Mx City). Oh man she was so gorgeous! she had those heavenly big boobs that I'm guessing now were fed of creativity and talent! ha ha. In the end we became really good friends, I wonder if she's single by now...
There are so many other memories that come to my mind between comics, movies, friends, teachers and random experiences as I grew old, but I have one that really impressed me and I keep it as a very pleased one because is one of the earliest.
It happens back in the 90's, I was like 7 years old I think, it was summer and my family and I went on vacation to San Diego, CA, to visit my father's brother, who lived there with his wife and my three cousins, Ilich, Jiddu and Shanti (cool names!).
By this time I didn't really use to read many superhero comics, most of the Marvel an DC cosmos were totally unknown to me and one of the great surprises I got the day we arrived to San Diego was the living room of my uncles house, it was filled with framed drawings of different cool characters made by my cousins, they were totally amazing and carefully drawn (you can imagine drawings of wolverine, punisher, ghost rider an many others elsewhere).
Those vacations were unforgettable for many reasons, we went to Disneyland & Seaworld, we were exploring another country which seems so exciting, but for me, the most grateful experience was being with my cousins, to know them, to let me get inspired by they cool personalities and talents. I remember clearly the day we left for México, my cousin Jiddu made a quick sketch of bugs bunny for my little brother. That instant was one of the key moments when I made up my mind of turning into a good draftstman and inspired me to practice all the time. I just wanted to be like Jiddu, that's all.
The time passed by, and many years later I decided to study Art & Design and now I'm beginning to live of my Illustrations. Jiddu on the other hand decided to go to the Architecture & Engineer world.
I told my uncle (Jiddu's father) this story once and he said to me that Jiddu didn't keep on drawing, thing that really surprised me a lot. Now I know that he focused that sensibility into others fields, because with the passing of time he really turned into a great scientist and a admirable man.
I bring you this whole story because just the past Friday 8th, my cousin Jiddu died. He was suffering a desease that slowly defragmented his mind, it was out of his reach, as I can understand.
Aside from the great sadness that wrapped me, his death gave me chance of doing this meditation. I wish I could have told Jiddu the importance of his existence in my life and how he marked me, now I couldn't. But afterwards, I feel thankful for the great gift and and the invaluable memory he left me. It was so fun to meet such an amazing guy.
I'll be missing you Jiddu :'(
